The CLP sets out rules for the classification of substances and mixtures, and specifies labelling and special packaging requirements.

As from June 1, 2015 a new regulation was adopted in the EC for producers, users, importers and distributors of chemical products which standardizes the wording and pictograms of Chemical Safety Data Sheets.

One of the main purposes of the CLP is to determine whether the characteristics of substances and mixtures are such so as to classify them as hazardous. The danger labelling therefore warns the user of the risk involved and prevents exposure.
