Asbestos disposal: methods and precautions

RespirareAmianto

Asbestos is notorious for the safety risks it poses to human health and so is the asbestos fibre cement also called eternit.

There are stringent national and international standards to be followed when carrying out disposal of both these substances. Removal can only be performed by licensed companies and the resulting asbestos waste must be disposed of in approved sites only.

The classification, packaging and labelling of asbestos and products containing asbestos are, furthermore, regulated by specific standards and laws.

Workers involved with the disposal of asbestos waste need to be properly trained

Workers involved in the handling and disposal of asbestos waste must attend specific professional training courses which provide workers with certification. The training provided needs to cover the following topics:

  • health risks associated with waste handling;
  • specific hygiene rules to be observed;
  • use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment;
  • special precautions to be taken to minimize exposure; threshold limit values;
  • need of environmental monitoring.

Training should also cover:

  • properties of asbestos and its effects on health;
  • types of products or materials likely to contain asbestos;
  • jobs and operations where one could be exposed to asbestos;
  • safe work procedures;
  • proper use of respiratory protective equipment;
  • emergency procedures and decontamination;
  • waste disposal;
  • need for medical surveillance.

Due to the hazardous nature of asbestos, there is a need to determine whether asbestos is present in the environment and the amount of asbestos present is to be analyzed before removal in order to ensure that the exposure limit values specified by law are respected.  One should also bear in mind that asbestos waste is classified as toxic and harmful by all current standards and legislation.

Respiratory Protective Devices need to be worn when disposing of asbestos

The major risk to workers’ health when disposing of asbestos is the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Respiratory protective devices  are, therefore, very important and , depending on the quantity and size distribution of fibres in the environment, respirators offering different protection levels are to be worn so as to ensure compliance to the fibre limits specified by Law.

Kasco srl  produces several types of respiratory protective devices  for the industrial sector including those required for the removal and disposal of asbestos.
