Construction workers: the importance of protecting the respiratory system

Masonry work may prove particularly insidious to the respiratory system. Consider the activities that need to be carried out during renovation:  knocking down walls, building, grinding and so on.

Respiratory diseases caused by dust and chemical agents

All of the activities described above produce dust: the dust deriving from building materials is particularly volatile and thus easily inhaled and deposited in the lungs. This can cause the advent of localized lung diseases even in a severe form. Building materials such as cement, mortar and stucco can be extremely harmful specifically because of their chemical composition. They contain substances which can attack the body and cause a variety of diseases, from simple irritations to cancer if large quantities are inhaled over a long period of time. The body, in fact, is not able to dispose of many of these substances which get deposited in the lungs, attack body tissues and compromise the proper formation of cells.

Building materials, however, are not the only hazardous elements to which workers may be exposed on building or renovation sites. They may also be exposed to the chemical particles released by solvents and acids, as well as the highly toxic chemical compounds found in spray paints, mortar and residue remover products, the inhalation which would probably cause inflammation, either mild or severe,  of the respiratory tract.

Respiratory Protective Devices are made available precisely for this purpose, i.e. to prevent the inhalation of harmful substances through the nose and mouth. There is quite a large variety of Respiratory Protective Devices designed for construction workers, which offer different types of protection depending on the job being done and the products used. In fact, it is well known that even microscopic particles have different diameters so the filters used on the protective devices need to be of the proper type for the job being done.

How to protect the respiratory system when working on construction sites

Among the safest Respiratory Protective Devices (RPD) available on the market for use on building and renovation sites are those incorporating helmets with wide view visors. These helmeted respirators protect the head from accidental falls of materials from above and the hearing system from troublesome noises made by the machinery present on the site. The respiratory protective devices used must be certified in order to ensure proper respiratory protection and comfortable breathing even under strain.

The powered respirator incorporating a helmet however, is only one of the various types of RPD available for respiratory protection when working in construction, building and renovation. Other types are filtering half masks which cover only the nose and mouth or powered respirators incorporating full face or half masks.

KASCO srl produces various types of RPD suitable for construction work. The model recommended for building maintenance and renovation work is the  K80E T8 respirator  which offers complete protection of the head, eyes, ears, neck and respiratory system of the wearer.
