Being a farmer means working in the open in contact with nature, but sometimes it is indispensable to use hazardous substances such as pesticides and, in this case, proper safety measures need to be adopted.
But how can one protect oneself effectively?
Spraying pesticides on crops can be very dangerous to the health of workers who need to protect not only the respiratory tract but also the face, eyes and possibly the rest of the body from the hazardous substances being used.
Kits containing everything needed, for pesticide spraying, from masks to gloves and disposable protective suits, are available on the market. It is advisable to wear disposable protective suits when spraying because washing garments that have been exposed to chemicals substances can be risky and is not recommended.
Face masks must be comfortable, and allow proper breathing without misting up. Moreover, filters must always be checked and replaced immediately when, while wearing the mask, chemical fumes are detected by smell or taste. Filters should also be changed after every 50 hours of work and/or at least once a year. Gloves and protective suits must be able to resist corrosion from pesticide splashes. Gloves, in particular, which can come into direct contact with chemical substances, should have a Category III risk protection level and be anatomical, waterproof and slip-proof. The protective suits must also have Category III protection level and be spray tight.
Spraying protection kits should therefore be purchased following the above mentioned recommendations and not basing choices only on colours, materials and prices. However, users should always verify that the protective systems used are CE certified and bear the CE approval mark.
Bear in mind that the risk of pesticide contamination does not occur only during spraying operations, but also during the mixing and pouring of the chemical products as well as the cleaning and decontamination of service machines where the same precautions are to be taken. Moreover, the legal obligations to be followed are well described in current standards.
Kasco srl produces specific spraying protection kits which include: a full face mask, a high efficiency combined filter, a pair of flocked cotton nitrile gloves and a disposable protective suit.
