Steel mills, among the most widespread industries in Italy, produce semi-finished products and items intended for use in other industries such as in mechanical engineering and iron metallurgy.
What risks do steel mill works run?
Although most of the production cycle takes place in plants and blast furnaces, there are many tasks that are assigned to workers during the material loading, unloading, smelting, refining, finishing and welding processes and other activities as well. People who work in steel mills come into contact with particles, harmful substances and toxic gases and may also be subject to dangers arising from the use of machinery or accidental falls from above. Workers, therefore, need to protect themselves by wearing personal protective equipment.
The PPE to be worn include protective clothing, masks, protective eyewear, ear plugs and other accessories. National and CE directives specify that personal protective equipment is to be provided by employers when there are no other means with which to protect the workers from hazards in the workplace.
