Occupational Safety and Health is a much discussed topic nowadays. New laws and standards are continuously being produced in order to ensure on the job protection for millions of workers.
The use of PPE and the compilation of safety records are the first steps that a serious and conscientious employer must put in place in order to guarantee his workers a secure workplace.
Dust inhaled during building restoration projects is harmful
Just as in all other work sectors, jobs related to building and building restoration are also subject to special regulations on worker safety and the use of PPE. On many building sites, however, situations just skirting the edge of legality can still be seen and it is precisely for this reason that legislation has tightened the controls and inspections to be carried out by territorial appointed bodies and labor inspection services. Besides the safety problem that has long been set aside in this work environment, work related diseases mainly caused by the inhalation of airborne dust, gases and chemical substances is also an important issue. Initially it was thought that work conducted in the open could somehow protect workers from these substances but this is not so. Fine dusts, such as silica dust, which are contained in many materials used on building sites, accumulate in the lungs and can cause workers multiple health problems.
In recent times, modern building techniques make use of many chemical substances in order to improve the appearance and texture of materials, but when inhaled, these substances damage the health of workers.
PPE to be used when restoring buildings
The main PPE used by workers for the protection of the respiratory system in the building restoration industry are: appropriate face masks equipped with either cartridges or filters, filtering face pieces or powered air purifying respirators. Face masks also protects the eyes from solvents, dust and chemical substances. Other PPE such as construction helmets, safety shoes and ear protectors are also used.
Kasco srl manufactures different types of PPE for use in industry and, in particular, a suitable RPD for building restoration work is the K80E T8 respirator which is recommended when working in industrial environments containing dusts, fumes and mists.
