To protect the safety and health of workers, a plan that provides for the identification of chemicals used in production needs to be implemented and product data sheets are to be produced. Only then is one able to assess the possible risks involved and provide workers with the appropriate PPE.
The industries which produce cosmetics, and those which manufacture paint and toxic blends use large amounts of chemical products which are required in order to obtain high quality finished products.
What is a chemical agent?
Legislation makes a clear distinction between a chemical agent, i.e. a substance (gas, powder etc. ) used in production, and a dangerous chemical agent, i.e. a substance that may pose a risk to the health of people who come into contact with it. Current legislation establishes rules for the marketing of chemical agents, for their use in specific categories of products (such as cosmetics), for their safe transportation and disposal. The Italian law, furthermore, prescribes occupational health and safety rules to protect workers against risks arising from prolonged exposure to potentially harmful substances.
In order to protect the safety and health of the workforce a plan which identifies the chemicals agents used in production and product fact sheets needs to be drawn up. Only then is one be able to assess the possible risks involved and provide all workers with appropriate PPE.
How to protect oneself from chemical agents?
The main PPE used by workers for the protection of the respiratory system in the chemical industry are; appropriate face masks equipped with either cartridges or filters, filtering face pieces or powered air purifying respirators. These types of device make it possible to adequately protect the upper respiratory tract and eyes from contact with possible irritant chemicals such as production fumes, gases and dust. Other PPE, i.e. for the protection of the hands (gloves), the body (overalls and safety shoes) and the eyes (eye wash kit) are also used in addition to the above mentioned respiratory protective devices. All PPE are to be chosen depending on the level of risk which is to be established by the employer.
The aim is to enable workers to perform their jobs in safety as specified in current standards.
The Venus1 M3 powered air purifying respirator is an ideal RPD for workers in cosmetic products, paint and toxic blends manufacturing. In case of work in potentially explosive environments the Cleanspace EX PAPR is recommended.
